Is Your Ghee Really Pure? Try These 3 Simple Kitchen Tests to Find Out

1. The Palm Test

Pure Bilona ghee melts at almost the same temperature as your body.

How to test it

Take about half a teaspoon of ghee and place it on your palm. Don't rub your hands together—just let it rest for a few seconds.

What to look for

If it's pure:
It should start melting within 10–20 seconds, turning into a clear liquid from the warmth of your hand.

If it's adulterated:
If it stays firm, feels waxy, or takes much longer to melt, it could contain palm oil or vanaspati, which have higher melting points.


2. The Pan Test

This is one of the quickest ways to check your ghee before cooking.

How to test it

Heat a clean pan and add a tablespoon of ghee.

What to look for

If it's pure:
It melts almost instantly, turns a rich golden-brown or amber shade, and releases a pleasant nutty aroma.

If it's adulterated:
If it melts slowly, remains pale yellow, or looks watery instead of browning naturally, it may contain vegetable oils or excess moisture.


3. The Iodine Test

Some manufacturers add starch to make low-quality ghee look thicker and grainier.

How to test it

Melt a tablespoon of ghee in a small glass bowl. Add 2–3 drops of liquid iodine solution (available at most pharmacies) and stir gently.

What to look for

If it's pure:
The color remains yellowish and oily.

If it's adulterated:
If the mixture turns blue or purple, it indicates the presence of starch.


Why Is Ghee So Often Adulterated?
